FOUND – 1948 Lastic Plastic Fleischaker Co. SQUALLING BABIES
My desire to find this doll for myself is one of the reasons I started Plush Memories. Now, thanks to a Fabulous Finder who kept sending me links to possible dolls until the right one came along – I have my baby!
My favorite dolls when I was little were two of the ugliest little life size twin babies I had ever seen. They had soft vinyl faces ( the first that I remember that felt like skin) that were all screwed up into big cries, and I loved them dearly.
I have since learned that they are called Squalling Babies, but I’ve been looking for them as the Horsman brand. Now I know mine were made by Lastic Plastic Fleischaker Co. in 1948.
I still remember finding them under the Christmas tree very early, long before my parents got up, when I was 5 years old. I snuck into the living room, and took them back to bed with me. I really didn’t understand, until I was a parent, why they were so upset that they didn’t get to see the look on my face when I first saw them. Oh, how I loved those soft little babies, and I wagged them everywhere.
We went to Florida one year, and of course they went, too. I left them on a window seat at the beach house while we were gone most of the day, and this was long before air conditioning. When we came back later that day, my beautifully ugly babies’ faces had soaked up the blue color from the vinyl window seat.
I was inconsolable, and can still get upset about that loss, after almost 60 years!
I wish I still had them, ruined blue faces and all.

I know EXACTLY how you feel, I’m still searching for my “molly” cloth doll. She is pink with yellow yarn hair, has a pink/white gingham-y dress and has a wind up switch on her back that played a lullabye and I was inconsolable when I lost her! In fact, she was the ONLY doll I ever liked according to my mom!
If anyone find her, please contact me! There was a pciture of a blue doll like this and i would be interested in him too!
Best wishes to all!
Lisa

Hi,
I was given one of these dolls when I was little too and thought it was ugly. My mom had us girls give away our dolls when we got to be around 12-13 years old and I always felt funny about giving up a couple of them that were special to me. One of them was the ugly doll. So, I found her on ebay and bought it and started to collect different kinds of the squalling babies. I have two of the lastic plastic, in fact, I bought the one in the picture on your site here and named her Mary after my grandmother and her twin from Florida, with the tan, Martha. The other six I have are all different from each other. At first I thought I was the only one collecting them but I guess anyone who had one of these dolls when they were little doesn’t forget them.

Contrary to your reaction, Linda, I loved mine from the first moment I saw them. They were the most realistic dolls I had ever seen. And yes, there are lots of people who collect them now.

Thanks for the heads up, Carrie. I’ve written the seller to ask for a face close-up.

Hi,
I wanted to let you know about this one on ebay. It was just listed and is a little too expensive for me but it is such great shape I thought you might like to know about it. Good luck, I hope you can get it.

Thanks, Linda. It is a very nice doll, but as you said – too expensive for me, too.
I have lots of pictures of one that is as close as I’m likely to ever see, and I think that’s just going to have to be good enough for me.

Hi again,
I knew they would drop the price if no one bought it. The same doll I told you about last week is now half the price and it is on a 3 day auction. This is the same price as the one in the photo on your site here but the shipping is a little high. Good luck!

Thanks, Linda. I almost bid on it, but then I realized just how big this doll is, based on the bed pillow size. I was only about 5 when I got my twins, and I could easily carry both of them in my arms. So mine would have been much smaller than this one – probably more like 14-16 inches long.
I’ve written the seller to confirm the size.

Hi,
Yes, they are kind of big dolls. It is the same size as the one in your photos, about 21″. When I first got the doll from my childhood back, I thought it seemed smaller than I remembered and then I realized that I was smaller then so maybe that is why. Too bad our folks didn’t take any pictures of us with our baby dolls.
Cheers!

Hi again,
Here’s a little 16″ doll. Since it doesn’t have squalling in the name it might go down in price.

The face is different from the big ones. She looks much more mad!
Good Luck!

I just bought one of these from a lady who had had it since her childhood. It has the sweater, hat , booties and pajamas. I was planning to put it up for sale on ebay, but you are welcome to buy it. Let me know where to send pictures!

Hi Susan,
I might be interested but would prefer to buy it through ebay. Let us know when you get it listed so we can see the photos. Hope you will take some photos of the cloth body so we can see the condition it is in. Thanks!
