My Yard Sale Rant – Sorry
My DH and I have this standing date for Friday. We go Estate Sale hunting.
I go through the local classifieds early in the morning, mark any likely targets, map them out in MapQuest, and we head out for a day of treasure hunting.
It’s fun to drive around our neck of the woods, and we love to look at interesting houses and other people’s “junk,” even if we don’t buy. And occassionally, we find some items that people don’t recognize the true value of, and we get to come home, tickled pink with our purchases, gleefully looking forward to listing them online for sale.
Well, that’s until recently. Lately, everything has been priced so high that we haven’t been buying anything!
So, what priceless treasure did we come home with, after driving around all those hours last week?
You’ve seen them at the mall. Those little furry stuffed animals, pushing the animated ball with their noses… at a price we couldn’t resist – a whole 25 cents. What would our cat, Fluffy, do with it?
Do YOU Yard Sale? Are the prices getting higher where you live? Do people dicker and haggle like they used to? Are you seeing more and more people who keep a “yard sale” going pretty much all the time?? Do the Estate Sale people bring leftovers from other sales to current sales and pass them off as part of this estate? Do they over-price everything and use the 1/2 price gimmick on the last day as an excuse?
Is it as much FUN as it used to be? Right now it doesn’t seem like it, but ask me next week and I might say yes. Well, I’ve had my rant, and, come Friday, we will be back out there, ’cause there’s always that next sale, with the hope and promise of finding a real bargain.
I miss going to great yard sales
I lived minutes from beverly hills
and use to get some great stuff.
Now i’m in pomona and they have nothing but crap out here.Stop by for a visit
Oooooooooooh
I’m getting goose bumps just thinking about what a Beverly Hills yard sale might be like. Were the prices reasonable, Michele?
cute pictures!
Thanks, Crouching Mommy, and very expensive, too, if you take into account all the gas we used driving around all day long to buy that 25 cent toy for her ;)!
But I have faith – we’re going to come home with something really good this week. I can just feel it! (We’re DUE)
I think people need the money from yard sales more now . They aren’t just getting rid of junk. So things are priced higher.
You may well be right, Dr. John. I’ve never tried to do a yard sale, myself, because our driveway entrance is too dangerous. We just take our things to the nearest thrift store and donate them. But I’ve heard people say they can make quite a bit of money on a weekend from having one.
Yard sales are my modern day adventures, so many treasure in the form of old trinkets, toys and old school games/pc’s
I, too, can feel the excitement rise, Zero, when we walk into the “real thing.” Why, we’ve had pieces we’ve rescued end up in museums! Talk about making us feel good, there’s no way to explain it.
I kind of like yard sale. Watch too much horror show and almost afraid to go estate sale. What if the piece of bargain is possessed LOL
Yes, gbmi, I’d say you ARE watching WAY too many horror movies! It has never occurred to me to be concerned about an estate sale being haunted, but then, I don’t watch horror movies at all. I’m too much of a skeerdy cat.
