FOUND – 1981 Treasure Masters Lancelot Unicorn with Long Beard Top Priority
We now know this 1981 bearded unicorn is Lancelot by Treasure Masters.
Xanadu had a beard, stood up, and had a wire frame inside, so the legs and tail could be posed different ways.
I’m looking for a plush white pose-able unicorn with long hair around her hooves, possibly from the late 70’s or early 80’s. I think the hair may have gone up the back of her legs a little bit, and she had a tuft of long hair at the tip of her tail. She also had a long beard. She was pose-able, as well, and I know the wires inside were coated in white plastic, because by the time she went missing one of the wires was poking out of her tail. See more description in the Comments.
She looked a lot like the classic unicorn from very old paintings and from the book and movie, “The Last Unicorn”.
I named her Xanadu, and she was my best friend for as long as I can remember. (Since I named her Xanadu, I can only assume I got her around the time the movie Xanadu came out, but that’s just a guess.) She is a long-lost lovie from my childhood. My older sister used to steal Xanadu from me and tease me about my “Unigoat” – she really did look a little like a goat, hehe.
I can’t recall what happened to Xanadu, unfortunately. I suspect my alcoholic ex-husband found her in my memory box and threw her out with some of my other childhood things. I haven’t seen her in nearly 20 years!
She’s important to me, because I’m at a point in life where I could really use some comfort. I’m suffering from a rare genetic disorder (Tuberous Sclerosis) that’s slowly taking away my mobility and freedom. I’m in pain every day, have trouble breathing, and I’ve had to stop doing a lot of the things I love, simply because I cannot physically handle them any longer. For example, I’ve had to re-home all but one of my dogs, because I can’t care for them any longer.
One of the things I’ve found some peace in is that old box of childhood memories. But the biggest part, my favorite part, is missing, and I don’t know where else to find her!
Thanks,
Charity

How big was Xanadu? Any other color besides white on her? Was she slender, or more of a “fat” plush? Been looking, and just want to be sure I can narrow down all possibilities. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for looking! She was kind of in the middle. Not super fat and squishy, but not hard and thin. If you squeezed her tail, you could push the firm stuffing aside and feel the wires inside, but her body was thickly stuffed so you couldn’t feel the wires there. I think her hooves might have been yellow, but after 20 years the memory could be going. She had glass or plastic bead eyes, dark, but I can’t recall if they had pupils or if they were just solid dark. She was pretty threadbare by the time she was lost, but her “fur” was fairly short and soft and the long mane, tail tip, and hoof hair was that typical plushy “hair” from that time frame. My mom can’t recall where she got her, unfortunately.

Oh, almost forgot, she wasn’t huge, but not tiny. I could carry her under my arm, and she was big enough I could lay my head on her tummy/side. I’m thinking maybe a pound or two. The stuffing was firm inside the body, but not too firm–definitely meant for hugging and loving, as opposed to display. The wires in the legs never stayed where I put them, but the tail was pretty good about staying put.

Well say, if I may ask, what colors were her mane, tail, and horn?
Post Code #25974
Her mane, tail, and beard were all white, as was the short, fuzzy hair on her body. I can’t remember the color of her horn and hooves precisely, but I want to say the horn, at least, was yellow. Gosh, it’s been so long!

Well say, although this isn’t her, I was wondering how closely Xanadu resembled this unicorn plushie I found:

Thanks for looking! I checked out the unicorn from ebay. It definitely helps to have a starting point when trying to describe something from so long ago. That one one ebay is little more cartoony than Xanadu was. Xanadu’s body was longer and head a little smaller, more proportionate, a little more realistic. She had a beard and long hair around her hooves. Xanadu’s tail was covered in the same fur as the rest of her body but had about three inches of the tip covered in longer hair, like her mane. From this photo, I can say that Xandu’s body fur was similar to this one.

I found a Dakin unicorn that looks awfully close; although it isn’t exact, I wonder if she might have been made by Dakin:

That’s much closer! Not exact, but that’s a lot closer. Oh my gosh, ebay #161078540323 is really similar. Xanadu stood up though and had a wire frame inside so the legs and tail could be posed different ways. ebay#161078540323 is really close in size and shape, the mane looks really close to the same length and type, but the tail is wrong and the beard is missing. Wow, this is the closest I’ve come to finding her! THANK YOU! I’m hopeful, once again <3

You know, I’ve seen several vintage Dakin unicorns who look very similar to yours; there was also a silver satin unicorn made by Dakin who had a beard. Perhaps Xanadu was made by Dakin?

That is a very real possibility, Kathy! Dakin seems to be the only one that has a similar shape and overall look. I sure wish I could recall what the tag said. By the time I was old enough to read the tag, it was faded and ratty from years of love. I can picture her in my head, all the parts that were important to me as a child, but trying to accurately describe her has sure been difficult. It’s weird what your brain will recall about childhood toys. Like I can very clearly see in my head what the balding patches looked like once all the fuzz was worn down, but I can’t remember exactly what color the horn of hooves were. If only my mother had the pictures in an accessible location, I could go dig through and try to find even one photo of Xanadu. It’s really frustrating.

This unicorn has a beard, a yellow horn, and a wire frame, but it might be a little too big (it’s meant to be a “sit-on” toy for little kids”).

Definitely too big. Looks too firm, too. The face on this one looks shaped, a little too realistic. Xanadu was definitely smaller and less life-like than this one. I could carry her around when I was very small, and I slept with her every night. Weird that I can recall her scent, but can’t tell you exactly what color her eyes were. It’s strange what memories we hold on to as we age! Thank you for looking.
Ooh, I think I may have just found Xanadu!

THANK YOU, Plush Memories Lost Toys Search Service, and thank you, KATHY! You found my Xanadu I am in tears right now. I thought she was lost forever. It’s been so long. . . so very long. 20 years! While this one isn’t “my” Xanadu (mine was likely stolen by my ex-husband and trashed) this is the same type. And she’s brand new, in the package. I don’t know how you found her, but you did. You are my angel, Kathy, whoever you are. THANK YOU! https://www.ebay.com/itm/390675738764 THANK YOU! You have no idea what this means to me. Or maybe you do. Maybe you have a lost lovey, too. Maybe someone helped you find yours and you’re returning the kindness. Whatever your reasons. . . THANK YOU! Purchased and on her way. I can’t wait to hold her again.
