As a children’s librarian I would like to recommend the book Tatty Ratty by Helen Cooper.

A little girl loses her rabbit and the parents talk about all the adventure the rabbit has. After being mended and washed by Cinderella etc. Tatty is flown to the moon where he is made sparkling again. Then delivered to a store. The parents then take the little girl to the store to find him. She can tell by his eyes which one is her old/new bunny.

It might help some of your parents out there to substitute another newer item.
